Review: “Paris, City of Pearls”, an exhibition by L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewellery Arts
Last month, along with my Raw Pearls colleagues, I had the privilege of visiting the “Paris, City of Pearls” exhibition at L’École des Arts Joailliers in Paris. This captivating showcase delved into the rich history and artistry surrounding pearls, offering a sensory journey through time.
A Sensory Introduction
The exhibition commenced with an engaging introduction to the origins of pearls, dispelling common myths and revealing their diverse forms and colours. A tactile experience awaited visitors at the entrance, where a pool of pearls invited us to touch and appreciate these natural treasures. This sensory approach set the tone for the immersive journey head.
Historical Elegance
As we progressed through the exhibition, we encountered over 100 exceptional pieces from renowned institutions and private collections. Notable highlights included a six-strand necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels and Art Nouveau creations by Henri Vever. These pieces illustrated the evolution of pearl jewellery from the late 19th century to the present day. The exhibition also shed light on the influence of Parisian artists and the “pearl mania” of the 1920s, showcasing how pearls became a symbol of modernity in art and fashion.
Contemporary Interpretations
The exhibition concluded with a look at contemporary designs, such as Fred’s whimsical “Fredy’s” brooches from the 1990s, demonstrating the enduring allure of pearls in modern jewellery. This progression from historical to contemporary pieces highlighted the timeless elegance of pearls and their continued inspiration for designers.
This exhibition was a must-visit for jewellery enthusiasts, history aficionados, and anyone intrigued by the timeless elegance of pearls. It offered a unique opportunity to appreciate the artistry and cultural significance of one of nature’s most cherished gems. The Raw Pearls team enjoyed a beautifully sunny Parisian day complete, of course, with Champagne and cheese!
